I am an Associate Professor in Language & Literacy at the University of Manitoba where I teach in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching & Learning in the Faculty of Education. My research and teaching interests include:

  • critical literacies and the teaching of language arts and literacy in ways that understand and think critically about language and literacy in relationship to power and agency, social justice and human rights;
  • transcultural literacies and the civic engagement and participation of diverse youth in their local and global communities;
  • multimodal writing and digital media, with a focus on visual and artifactual literacies, place, and identity;
  • practitioner research and reflexive practitioner inquiry, particularly in relationship to diversity and equity;
  • language and literacy as relational and dynamic, affording different ways of knowing and understanding ourselves, communities and world; and
  • innovative approaches to teacher education through school and community partnerships and the collaborative design of interest-driven, participatory learning spaces.

These interests are framed by my commitment to equity and my belief that literacy is a powerful tool for civic engagement and social justice. As an educator with experience as a middle and high school teacher, teacher educator, and researcher, I am dedicated to building strong teacher education programs and cultivating close collaborations  between universities and schools.
